What exactly is blossom-end rot?

This is a common problem for tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. It appears as a dark, rotted spot on the end of the fruit. It occurs when plants can't absorb enough calcium from the soil, usually because of excessively high temperatures, dramatic fluctuations in soil moisture or too much nitrogen fertilizer.
