The best way to amend clay is to add lots of organic matter – like peat moss, compost, shredded leaves, straw or well-rotted manure. You can also build raised beds or berms to garden in. Because they're higher than the surrounding area, raised gardens drain much better, solving a big problem of heavy-clay soil.
