It’s probably sooty mold, a fungus that grows on insect excrement. Sooty mold itself won't harm your plant and can be washed off. However, it indicates an insect problem you'll want to treat. Check your gardenia for pests such as scale insects, mealybugs, and whiteflies. Once you identify the insect, you can find a good treatment.
