The Radiance of the Garden in Fall

To some gardeners, the garden in autumn brings as much joy as the first snowdrops peaking through the snow does in early Spring. There’s no rush to get things planted and pruned like in the spring. Warm, dry weather makes it pleasant enough to spend the day outside. Mother Nature’s color palette changes to accommodate the bright clear blue of the autumn sky and even garden pests are few.

It’s time to tidy up, plant, divide and plan for next year. But it’s also time to jump in leaves, pick pumpkins and cozy up to a firepit or chimenea, tell a few grizzly ghost stories, and say a fond farewell to another year.

The Colorful Chrysanthemum

Hardy mums add mounds of color and blend beautifully with the natural colors of fall. You can enjoy these hardy bloomers until the first big freeze and they will return for years to come. You can combine mums with your fall blooming perennials or use them to camouflage plants that have died back.

In our greenhouses you’ll find non-hardy mums which are great for pots or indoor display. These will add instant color inside or out, but will die with the first frost if kept outside. Group your mums with a few pumpkins or gourds on a porch or inside the entrance to your home for an inviting touch of autumn color.
