Fall Garden Checklist

Fall is a busy time in the garden. Use this handy check list to make sure your garden is ready for the nippy days ahead.

Prune spring and summer shrubs
Plant & feed spring flowering bulbs
Plant trees, shrubs and perennials
Plant hardy mums, ornamental grasses and icicle pansies for fall color
Rake and compost leaves
Stock up on firewood
Mulch tender perennials and new plantings before cold weather
Clear beds of annuals that are spent
Fertilize and reseed your lawn
Lift and divide peonies, hostas, daylilies
Dig caladium before first frost
Spray roses for mildew and black-spot control
Plant a few bulbs where the sun touches in February for an early spring surprise
Inventory and repair or replace worn or broken garden tools, rakes and hoses
Drain and store or winterize fountains
Install an energy-efficient birdbath heater
Move bird feeders to a convenient spot for winter filling and bird watching
